I’ve been seeing a lot of trailers for this new show, International Student around lately. So I thought I’d have a look to see what it’s about. The Pilot was available online, and I decided to watch it.
International Student was part of ABC’s Comedy Showdown in May 2016, which featured 6 possible pilots that ABC could pick up as a whole series.
The episode focuses on Ronny’s first day at University, and the quest to get the only textbook available for an assignment. In doing so he must join the group of other Asians and beat them in the Boat Race drinking game.
The characters in the show are very stereotypical. The FOBs and the Upper Class Aussies. It feels very unnatural and forced. Ronny’s group of friends must adapt to living in Australia, and join the cultures norms that come with being a student living on campus.
What irks me is the random Australian girl that befriends Ronny. She doesn’t fit in with the group and is only there the eventual love interest in the show.
Ronny Chieng: International Students airs Wednesday at 9pm AEST on ABC1, it’s also available to watch on iView.
