3 Idiotas (2017) trailer

READ: Aamir Khan and Rancho. The Perfect Pair.

3 Idiotas is the Mexican remake of the Hindi film 3 Idiots (2009) that stars actors Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles.

The story is based on Chetan Bhagat‘s novel Five point Someone: What not to do at IIT! (2004). In which three friends navigate their way through the Indian College set up.

The book was adapted to the screen by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The Mexican remake stars Alfonso Dosal as the titular character Pancho (Rancho), with Christian Vázquez and Germán Valdés III playing the roles of the two friends.

Seated (L to R): Christian Vázquez, Alfonso Dosal, Germán Valdés III

From the trailer, I can see that they’ve tried to replicate some of the scenes from the Hindi version, and some of the gags are new which probably has to do with Mexican culture. Because, well some jokes don’t work outside of India.

The biggest change I noticed was the love interest in this film is now a student at the College, instead of a doctor at the hospital. In 3 Idiotas, Mariana (Martha Higareda) is seen sitting with the rest of the group on the first day of class.

One thing I hope that has not been dropped from 3 Idiotas is Chatur’s (Omi Vaidya) speech. This was comedy gold and I hope that it is replicated to the best of their ability.

The story has already been remade in Tamil as Nanban (2012), while Stephen Chow is set to direct and star in the Chinese remake. Chopra is still in talks with studios in Hollywood and Italy about making adaptations of the movie in English and Italian, respectively. I am yet to watch the Tamil version, but do have plans to do so.

3 Idiotas releases in Australia on Friday the 2nd of June, 2017 in selected cinemas.
